What is Defensive Driving and why would we want to be a Defensive Driver? In summary it’s being able to drive and avoid getting into and or contributing to road accidents. It involves compliance with applicable road rules and implementing specific driving techniques to avoid accidents. A Defensive Driver should never be involved in an accident!
Consider this simple example of Defensive Driving. Imagine we are leaving Sheraton Mall at the Courts/ Subway exit and intend on turning right in the direction of Sargeant’s Village. At the junction you have the option of turning left in the direction of Tino Terrace or right to Sargeant’s Village. For users turning left, the lane curves to the left and similarly right for users turning right. The average driver turning right will follow the lane turning right and stop at the white line if they feel like stopping. A Defensive driver turning right would avoid that trap by indicating right signaling to the driver behind their intentions, turning right initially, and then making a sharp left turn bring the vehicle perpendicular to the main road and stopping the vehicle before the solid stop line. This ensures that the driver can turn their heads left and right in quick succession to confirm the road is clear before moving off. Additionally, at the point of moving off the driver would be able to use their peripheral vision both left and right which is only possible if they are perpendicular to the main road. This simple technique on a busy and fast moving intersection can save your life.(They a few more points to consider in this example that we provide on the actual driving lessons) Note there are several more of these junctions in Barbados.
How is it taught? We meet our students at Sheraton or Warrens and complete an assessment which costs $200. Based on the assessment and the driving test date we create a unique lesson plan to get the student ready for the test while implementing Defensive Driving techniques. The initial driving lessons focus on an introduction to using a vehicle, basic steering techniques and executing left and right turns at major stops. This is all done in a quiet development away from traffic and pedestrians to reduce first time student stress and anxiety.
The second phase is joint lessons where is student drives for 30 minutes and assist the instructor in conducting the lesson for the other 30 minutes. This approach reinforces what was previously taught and helps students to accept responsibility for their actions or inactions on the road.
We offer an optional demerit system that encourages parents to take a supplemental role in the development of their child’s driving habits. Additional information on this can be made available on commencement of the program. The course can be paid for in its entirety which is discounted or monthly. Both Automatic and Manual Light Goods courses are taught. What is the cost compared with traditional Pickup from Home Driving Lessons?
Let’s compare! Established Driving Schools providing standard driving lessons charge approximately $75 per hour. Pickup from home lessons are usually 2 hours to facilitate picking up and dropping off of the students before and after. That’s $150 per week or $600 per month for 6 months i.e. the duration of the permit and amounts to a sum total of $3,600. Our Defensive Driving course which is executed at a much higher standard cost $1,000 per month for 3 months for Automatic Light Goods, and 4 months for Manual Light Goods. That’s 15% less for a superior level of Tuition for a Lifetime, Lifesaving skill.
